Designation

To ensure quality and safety of food, Food Quality and Safety Division will execute the following functions:

  1. Develop policy, regulations, mandatory standards, guidelines and other documents related to food safety and quality in the country;
  2. Provide inspection services as per ISO/IEC17020;
  3. Enforce food safety standards of food commodity;
  4. Conduct food safety assessment;
  5. Register and issue licence of food businesses;
  6. Licensing of food handlers;
  7. Inspection and monitoring of domestic food establishments and institutional food supplies;
  8. Issue import authorization for food and food products including foods derived from GMO;
  9. Inspect and test food and food products for import;
  10. Issue export certificate of food and food products;
  11. Sample and test food and food products for export facilitation and to fulfil sanitary requirements;
  12. Manage food safety incidents in the country;
  13. Promote food safety measures by implementing international good practices;
  14. Conduct surveillance of food to promote safety and quality;
  15. Strengthen laboratories (NFTL and satellite labs) to support implementation of food safety and quarantine measures;
  16. Create public awareness on the national policies, guidelines and regulatory measures related to Biosafety (GMO);
  17. Liaise with relevant agencies at the National, Regional and International level relating to food safety; and
  18. Build Competence of the officials in the different areas of food safety
