Designation
To ensure quality and safety of food, Food Quality and Safety Division will execute the following functions:
- Develop policy, regulations, mandatory standards, guidelines and other documents related to food safety and quality in the country;
- Provide inspection services as per ISO/IEC17020;
- Enforce food safety standards of food commodity;
- Conduct food safety assessment;
- Register and issue licence of food businesses;
- Licensing of food handlers;
- Inspection and monitoring of domestic food establishments and institutional food supplies;
- Issue import authorization for food and food products including foods derived from GMO;
- Inspect and test food and food products for import;
- Issue export certificate of food and food products;
- Sample and test food and food products for export facilitation and to fulfil sanitary requirements;
- Manage food safety incidents in the country;
- Promote food safety measures by implementing international good practices;
- Conduct surveillance of food to promote safety and quality;
- Strengthen laboratories (NFTL and satellite labs) to support implementation of food safety and quarantine measures;
- Create public awareness on the national policies, guidelines and regulatory measures related to Biosafety (GMO);
- Liaise with relevant agencies at the National, Regional and International level relating to food safety; and
- Build Competence of the officials in the different areas of food safety
